Meet the Carlsbad Team Behind Mainspring Garage Door Co.
We’re the crew that shows up when your spring snaps at 6 a.m. or your opener quits before a holiday weekend. Every technician on our Carlsbad team trains under the K.E.Y.S. code: Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it. That means background-checked, uniformed, and factory-familiar with LiftMaster, Genie, Clopay, and the rest before anyone touches your door. No phone trees. No surprises on the bill. Just people who know the work and stand behind it.
Our People
Carl Dutton, Owner
I started this company in 1984, naming it for the mainspring, the single component that carries the entire weight of a garage door. That choice wasn’t poetic; it was honest. The spring is where everything fails or holds together. I’ve spent 42 years in Carlsbad watching coastal humidity corrode cable drums in La Costa and salt air stiffen rollers in the Village. I still answer the phone myself some mornings, and I still write the 90-Day Done Right Promise on every job ticket by hand. My rule is simple: state the flat price before any work begins, then make sure we earn it. When I’m not on a job, I’m usually restoring vintage Craftsman openers from the 1980s in my garage. They run quieter than most new units.
Marcus T., Lead Technician
Marcus has been with us for 14 years and handles the calls nobody else wants: torsion spring failures on double-wide doors, custom wood installations in Bressi Ranch, and the occasional emergency at 2 a.m. when a homeowner’s car is trapped before a flight. He’s factory-certified on Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster systems, which most shops in North County won’t touch because the parts are proprietary. Marcus keeps a notebook of every unusual repair he’s done, organized by neighborhood. His handwriting is terrible, but his cable windings are perfect. He lives in Oceanside with two dogs who have learned to sleep through his pager.
Elena R., Senior Installer
Elena joined us in 2019 after eight years doing commercial dock doors in San Diego, and she brought a rigor to residential work that raised our whole standard. She specializes in Amarr and Clopay full-view aluminum installations, the kind that Carlsbad homeowners increasingly want for modern builds in Robertson Ranch. Elena measures twice, orders once, and has never had a callback for a door that didn’t seal properly against our coastal wind. She also trains our apprentices on level placement, which she insists is where most installers cut corners. On weekends she surfs at Tamarack before the crowds arrive.
Dave K., Service Coordinator
Dave is the live voice you get when you call (760) 852-7175 at midnight on a Sunday. He’s been with Mainspring for six years, and he knows which technician is closest to Carlsbad, which trucks carry Raynor torsion springs, and whether your “grinding noise” is likely a stripped gear or a failing bearing. Dave doesn’t read from a script. He asks specific questions, gives realistic arrival windows, and never promises same-day installation for a full door replacement because he knows that work requires measurement and ordering. He grew up in Vista and still coaches youth baseball, which explains why he’s patient with panicked homeowners and precise with scheduling.
Javier M., Apprentice Technician
Javier started with us in 2023 after completing a mechanical program at MiraCosta College. He’s currently journeyman-training under Marcus and Elena, working his way through spring conversions, opener programming, and safety sensor alignment on every major brand we service. Javier’s specialty so far is Genie screw drive troubleshooting, a dying skill since most shops have moved to belt and chain systems. He’s methodical, asks questions most people are too proud to ask, and already has a reputation for leaving job sites cleaner than he found them. He commutes from San Marcos and is usually the first to volunteer for early-mergency calls in the La Costa Valley area.
One Standard, Every Job
The Carlsbad crew is part of a network that shares parts inventory, training protocols, and the same flat-price policy, but we operate like a local shop because we are one. Every technician arrives in a stocked truck with springs, cables, rollers, and openers for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and the rest. Most repairs finish in a single visit. Every job carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it’s not right, we come back at no charge, no paperwork, no arguing. That’s been the deal since 1984, and it’s not changing.
Our standing offers apply here too: $50 off any repair over $250, a free second opinion on any written estimate you bring us, $89 seasonal tune-ups, and a permanent 5% discount for seniors and veterans. The price we state before work begins is the price on the bill. No surprises.
